Back in early February news broke that Chicago’s Goose Island would be releasing a new beer called Night Stalker Stout named in honor of the show Kolchak: The Night Stalker. It seems random, but Kolchak took place in Chicago and Night Stalker Stout rolls off the tongue better than The Bob Newhart Show Stout. Read on in the full post for our impressions.
We couldn’t hide our enthusiasm and wrote a hurried (read: sloppy) post on the announcement. This past Saturday we finally got our hands on one and it was good. While glancing down the ABV listings, Night Stalker was sure to jump out at us. It sits at 11.5% alcohol by volume. It almost seems more appropriate to just say it’s 23 proof.
The first taste is thick enough to compare to syrup and the taste of alcohol is there, but it’s also a really flavorful and delicious stout. Night Stalker seems to get better as you drain the glass and pick up more on the rich taste. A second glass would be too much, but it is a great way to start an evening or end a weeknight. We highly recommend trying this seemingly limited release (it’s not even on the beers page of Goose’s newly designed website) before it’s gone.
If you have the sort of job where you find yourself bored watching YouTube videos, check out part one of the Spanish Moss Monster episode of Kolchak: The Night Stalker below. It’s in 7 parts on YouTube and could easily kill an hour of your Tuesday.
