As Americans, we believe in certain unalienable rights. At Rough Draft, we’re not sure what those rights are, but we know we enjoy having them (We kid. We’re not that voluntarily ignorant). So it’s a wonder to us that no one thought to write a beer Bill of Rights until 2009. It took us that long to figure out that we shouldn’t have to put up with the likes of Miller Chill? Really?! Who let the ball drop on that one?
American Craft Beer Week (ACBW) kicks off today, May 11th. It’s a national event aimed at highlighting the culture and contributions of craft beer. The event, started by the Brewer’s Association, a collective of many of America’s small, independent craft breweries, was recognized by Congress back in 2006 and has been held annually since then. Sure, sure, it’s still young, but that’s no reason to scoff. Plenty of people love young things… just ask anyone from To Catch a Predator.
The point is, of the more than 1500 breweries in the U.S., 97% of them are small brewers, most of which are independently owned. And those 97% account for just 4% of the U.S. beer sales by volume. That’s a small piece of the pie for a lot of people to get a piece of. At Rough Draft we stress drinking whatever works for you; the big guys, the small guys, cheap stuff or fine brews, but from May 11-17, we hope you’ll buy a six pack of something different and support the folks that are doing what they can to keep beer interesting, delicious, and different. Their livelihood depends on our tastes.
